Like, never. I’ve never really had a negative feeling towards tumblr, not even annoyance. Because my dash is amazing.

But this title and the note that followed it sent me into a dark place.

How to tell if you, or a white person you know, is racist.

The note contains questions and if you answered yes, you were a “flat out racist”.

The first thing that got me was the “white person” use in the title. Because apparently 99% of white people are racists. No, switch that. 99% of racists are white people. Thank you, for putting me into a group of people based on the color of my skin. OH WAIT! Doesnt that sound familiar.

And the questions in the list are purely set for white people. As if we are the only racist people. “Have you used the race card to defend your ‘whiteness’?” or “Do you believe that it is possible to be racist against white people?”. Yes. Yes I do. Because that exactly what that damn note is.

I understand standing up for your cause, and fighting for equal rights. But you are not about to it seem like all white people are racists or blame racist on whites. You are allowed to be proud of yourself all you want, but the second a white wants to be proud, we basically just screwed ourselves over. Here’s scholarships for minorites, what about me? I sit here, having to beg the government for money to go to college because half the scholarships out there, I cant apply for because of my skin color. Historically Black College? AWESOME. Historically White College? They must hold annual KKK meetings.

I swear, being the minority white girl in a majority African American school has taught me so much. (Dont even get me started on the “Why is it that Im “white” but you get “African American”, when you aren’t even from Africa” arguement) But apparently everything I say and do when it comes to race is wrong. Hell, half the time Im afraid to voice my opinion in class discussion because I might get jumped after class.

Anywho, my overall point. Dont throw my race under the bus to make your race feel better. If the note had be title “How to tell if you or anyone you know is racist” and taken out the question that were geared directly at white people, I’d have been perfectly fine.

Thank you, have a nice day.

PS If I offend you with anything I say, feel free to message me about it. Im not afraid to say that I, like 99.9% of the world, have some slight racism in me. Sorry that not perfect and honest enough to admit it.

Oh for fuck’s sake. This has been the whole damn argument today and I’m getting a little bit sick of it. Let me introduce myself. I’m Austin, I’m white as shit, I was raised by white supremacists, and oppression against whites does not exist. You’re describing prejudice against white people, which isn’t racism because racism is prejudice + power. A lot of (white) people don’t understand this, or why prejudice against us is absolutely not the same as white prejudice toward non-whites, but I’ll be more than happy to explain it to you.

Yes, you will sometimes be pigeonholed due to your race. Non-white people will occasionally be prejudicial against you and assume that you’re racist. Now, in your case, it’s because you’re mind-numbingly racist (actually believing that prejudice by People of Color toward whites is the same as racism toward People of Color by whites) but this happens to white people who aren’t mind-numbingly racist too. It happens to me, and I’m not upset by it, because I understand what it is. When white people show prejudice against non-whites, it is oppressive and racist because we have power. All the power. Literally all of it. Most of the time when non-whites show prejudice toward whites, it’s self-defense. That’s the part you don’t get. It’s not oppressive, it’s ‘I want to fucking stay alive and these are the people to not trust.’

Which brings me to this:

Don’t throw my race under the bus to make your race feel better.

Fellow white person: We own the bus. We paid for the bus with slave labor. We get to decide who sits on the bus. We get to decide who the bus runs over. The bus magically fucking flies over white people. I do, on a basic level, understand your need to be oppressed for your race. I share that race and it’s built into me too. I fight it with everything I have, and sometimes it still wins. White people can be oppressed, yes, but not because of whiteness. Awful, terrible, horrific, unspeakable things have happened to me in my life, but not because I’m white. This is just something that we have to accept.

We have the power to make sure that we never experience racism against us. That’s the end of the story. The same rules do not apply for everybody.

Austin’s commentary. Racism = power + prejudice.
